Aiming to preserve the centuries-old traditions of printmaking while keeping in step with the varying modes of contemporary art making, New West Editions offers a comfortable and dynamic environment where artists can create prints that enhance and strengthen the conceptual roots of their work.
The New West specializes in producing limited edition intaglio prints, however, artists are encouraged to utilize any technique, including woodcut, monotype, and sculptural multiples to ensure that collaborations are of the highest possible level of originality.
Located in Seattle, the heartbeat of the northwest, New West Editions invites artists from all over the country and internationally, and from all walks of art making practices to work in collaboration with printer and founder, Max Portnoy. Born and raised in Seattle, Max headed to the east coast to pursue an arts-rich education. After spending nearly a decade on the east coast and receiving his MFA in painting from Boston University, Max found his way back to Seattle to lay down his roots. Max’s internal compass told him that his true North, was West.
The 600 square foot studio, located in the Eastlake neighborhood of Seattle, features two etching presses, including a Griffin floor model etching press with a 39×66” bed. The studio is equipped with etching facilities and equipment capable of processing a 36×48” plate, including hot plates, large etching trays, a custom built aquatint box, forced air drying system, large flat-files to store over-sized prints, and ample table and wall space for artists to develop imagery as freely as they would in their own studio.
New West Editions is a professional print studio focused on publishing prints by early to mid-career artists. Our program also offers contract printing services to artists, galleries, and institutions interested in publishing their own prints. Contact Max Portnoy for details about contract printing rates.
