New West Editions is excited to announce the release of its current collaboration with Bay Area artist Dean Smith. Dean is recognized for his large-scale works on paper that graft hard-edge, geometric abstraction with organic compositions which dissolve the boundary between lyrically poetic and coolly scientific. His works on paper, usually executed in graphite, are methodical, intense, and introspective. In addition to his large-scale drawings Smith is involved with making films. His love of process is evident in his cinematic approach, which involves filming first in Super-8 and then digitally transferring the footage and editing it in Final Cut.

During our first conversations about his project, Dean expressed interest in working on a more intimate scale and wished to explore the process of photogravure. The medium of photogravure and the addition of chine colle yields a richness and warmth to the printed surface and also imparts a patina of age to the images; a conceptual element Dean was interested in incorporating in his work.

The images for his suite of photogravures, taken from the recent film series, video mandalas and a film in progress, memory in d minor, are contemplative and intensely quiet; there is also something secretive about the images Smith chose to use.

Between the haunting familiarity of a glowing sky, photographed from high in the clouds and a World War II era plane passing silently above our heads are tightly woven abstractions similar to Buddhist ritual mandalas. Their presence punctuates the cognitive space between the brooding landscapes to offer a spiritual and meditative interlude – a chance for us to clear our head from the disquieting beauty of memory and history…

steganographic memories is for sale as a suite, presented in a handmade clam-shell box covered in chocolate brown linen, containing all six prints, a letterpress title page and colophon. Each image is printed on Hahnemuhle Copperplate with an Owara Mulberry paper chine collé in an edition of 10.
